I moved into summerstock housing tonight and a friendly orange cat immediately greeted my kitties to the neighborhood (he actually climbed into my damn car).

“What the woman who labors wants is the right to live, not simply exist — the right to life as the rich woman has the right to life, and the sun and music and art. You have nothing that the humblest worker has not a right to have also. The worker must have bread, but she must have roses, too.”

— Rose Schneiderman

hi jacqui, sorry if you've been asked this before but do the emojis on your twitter have a particular meaning? thanks, have a good one

sandovers:

hey there! you must mean 🍞🌹, right? they do have meaning. “bread and roses” is a political slogan aligned with the labour/workers movement and/or trade unionism and/or socialism (lived socialism, not abstract ivory tower socialism, which i have a much more ambivalent relationship with). it originated in a speech by rose schneiderman, given not long after the triangle shirtwaist factory fire, about the worker’s right to a full and human life, not just subsistence:

“What the woman who labors wants is the right to live, not simply exist — the right to life as the rich woman has the right to life, and the sun and music and art. You have nothing that the humblest worker has not a right to have also. The worker must have bread, but she must have roses, too. Help, you women of privilege, give her the ballot to fight with.”

even more famous, and where i first encountered the phrase, is the labour song of the same name, which was originally a poem inspired by schneiderman’s speech:

Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses

the song has been covered numerous times, including by joan baez, utah phillips, and ani difranco, but by far my favourite version is the one included in the film pride:

Bottle filled with MYSTERY LIQUID dating back to time of Jesus Christ discovered

A BOTTLE containing a mystery liquid dating back to the time of Jesus Christ has been hailed as a “unique” discovery after being unearthed in Russia.

The 2,000-year-old artefact was uncovered on the site of the Phanagoria city, which was founded in the 6th century BC.

The ancient city was the largest Greek settlement on the Taman peninsula in the present-day Krasnodar Krai region of Russia.

The extraordinary object was discovered in the grave of a warrior in the Eastern Necropolis of the city.

It is filled with a mystery liquid which has not been identified.

Vladimir Kuznetsov, head of the expedition, described the discovery as “unique”.

He said: “The discovery of the large glass filled with unknown liquid in the sarcophagus of the Phanagorian horseman warrior is unique.”

The discovery is the first of its kind, with Mr Kuznetsov revealing that bottles previously found have been empty or full of soil.

He said: ”There are hundreds of similar bottles that were found in Phanagoria before that did not have the liquid.

“They were either empty or filled with soil.”

The large glass bottle contains a clear liquid with dark sediment at the bottom.

The discovery is the first time the expedition team have found liquid to have survived for that length of time.

Mr Kuznetsov said: “This is the first time me or my colleagues are seeing a liquid surviving that long.”

For what it’s worth, 2018 has been a really terrible year for the world, but it’s been a really great year for archeologists digging up and opening things that will unleash unspeakable eldritch horrors upon humanity.

WATCH: An Octopus in New Zealand Is Taking Photos of Its Visitors

molluscfacts:

Meet the world’s first “octographer” - Rambo, a cephalopod at New Zealand’s Sea Life Aquarium who’s taking photos of its visitors.

You can see this impressive ability in action above, and watch as Rambo makes sure she doesn’t have her sucker-covered tentacles in the shot before hitting the shutter button.

Of course, Rambo isn’t the first cephalopod to perform high-level activities - not only do octopuses have mind-boggling camouflage skills, superb speed and the ability to walk on land, they can also use tools and, apparently, predict soccer games.

But, as far as we’re aware, this is the first time an octopus has been trained to take photos. The project is part of a collaboration between the aquarium and Sony, who provided Rambo with the camera and its special underwater casing that’s lowered into her enclosure. Then, when spectators line up against a specially provided backdrop, she’s able to use her dexterous tentacle to push the red shutter button, and take better photos than pretty much all of our parents.

I don’t know about you guys, but I, for one, welcome our new octopus overlords.
